Our top tips for packing

When you begin packing, a typical rule for what should go into a box is, if it can fit into a box, pack it into one. If you’re supplying your own boxes, make sure they are strong enough for transporting heavy items and that it can be closed.

We use and supply clean white packing paper for breakables and other personal items. We recommend covering the bottom of the box with scrunched up paper before packing every item and placing them carefully in the box. Do not overfill, but ensure there is enough in them so that they don’t get crushed if stacked.

We would strongly advise packing your heavier belongings such as books and tools into smaller boxes, and then use more standard size boxes for typical everyday items such as pots and pans. These can be supplied by us before your move.

To avoid boxes collapsing and potentially damaging the contents, you should always have heavier boxes at the bottom and put lighter ones on top of them.

When you arrive at your new home, there are some items that you will want and need immediately. We would advise having a small odds box which can be easily recognised to pack remotes, nuts and bolts, cables, tools etc.

We do not advise a maximum weight, but you should make a sound judgement when packing. As an example, it wouldn’t make sense to pack a standard size box full of books. If you are struggling to lift it, then the chances are it’s too heavy.

It is very important to write on every box listing the contents and which room they were packed from. This will help with the unpacking stage. Boxes containing fragile items that are more susceptible to breaking should be labelled as “fragile”. Similarly, heavier boxes should be clearly labelled too.

Most items are ok to move, but items such as frozen foods, gas cylinders, paints, weapons, flammables etc shouldn’t be packed for removal. We can supply a full list if required.

This is something that is quite often completed incorrectly and could result in the box collapsing. The bottom should be taped first, followed by both ends so that you create a ‘H’. This process should then be completed when sealing up the box.

It is important to ensure that every item is wrapped individually before being packed. Plates should go towards the bottom on their end before placing lighter and more delicate items such as glassware on top.

FAQs for UK removals

The easiest way to arrange a quote is to fill out this form with your details. If you would prefer to speak to someone over the phone, please call us on 0161 7906666. Alternatively, you can also email us at enquiries@anchorremovals.co.uk. We will then arrange a pre-move survey with one of our removal consultants to get the ball rolling.

If you wish to proceed with Anchor Removals, please give us as much notice as possible. If your move is tied to completion, we would recommend booking your date as soon as contracts have been exchanged, however, please contact us prior to this to confirm availability for your desired date(s).

We can customise our service to you, but there are typically three different options for moves within the UK. These are: full packing, partial packing (typically breakables only) or owner-packing. We also have supplementary services such as dismantling and reassembling, and special packaging for items requiring extra attention.

This all hinges on what level of service you require, how much you have to pack and move, where you are moving from and to, and so on. For a better idea of this, please use our online budget tool.
